In a significant stride toward environmental sustainability, the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) has inaugurated Dakota Prairie Composting, a state-of-the-art organics recycling facility located in Louisville Township. This facility stands as one of the Midwest’s premier composting centers, processing 155,500 tons of organics annually and diverting an additional 25,000 tons of food scraps from landfills each year.
By converting organic waste into valuable compost, soil blends, and mulch, Dakota Prairie Composting plays a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions by approximately 21,000 metric tons annually. This initiative aligns with Minnesota’s ambitious goal of recycling 75% of the state’s waste by 2030, showcasing a commitment to environmental stewardship and resource conservation.
Situated on a 93-acre site near the intersection of highways 169 and 41, the facility is strategically positioned to serve both commercial and residential sectors. Its design allows for future expansion, with the potential to process up to 212,500 tons of organics, including 35,000 tons of food scraps, each year.
SMSC Chairman Cole W. Miller emphasized the facility’s significance, stating, “At its core, this history-making facility reflects our commitment to transforming waste into a resource and honors our Dakota tradition of safeguarding the environment for seven generations.”
As Dakota Prairie Composting continues to operate, it not only contributes to waste reduction but also promotes sustainable practices within the community, setting a benchmark for organics recycling in the region.
