Shakopee’s Water Quality Concerns Prompt Community Action

Recent assessments have highlighted significant concerns regarding the quality of tap water in Shakopee. The city’s drinking water received a grade of D (49 out of 100), indicating poor water quality. This evaluation stems from the presence of contaminants and numerous unresolved violations.

Shakopee’s water systems serve approximately 48,263 residents using groundwater sources. Notably, lead levels were measured at 3.0 ppb (90th percentile), which is within EPA limits. However, testing detected five PFAS compounds in the water supply. Additionally, the system has 680 violations on record, including 164 health-based violations, with 236 remaining unresolved.

In response to these findings, city officials are collaborating with state agencies to address the violations and improve water quality. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and participate in community meetings to discuss potential solutions and ensure the safety of the city’s water supply.
